What is a Learning Management System (LMS)?

A Learning Management System (or LMS) is a software package that enables the management and delivery of online content to learners.

Most learning management systems are web-based to facilitate "anytime, any place" access to learning content and administration. Typically an LMS allows for learner registration, delivery of learning activities, and learner assessment in an online environment.

More comprehensive learning management systems often include tools such as competency management, skills-gap analysis, succession planning, certifications, and resource allocation (venues, rooms, textbooks, instructors, etc.).

What is a Training Portal?

By utilising a training portal people can download or consult specific information. There are a couple of differences between a training portal and a learning management system. A training portal is decentralised and utilises the "pull" principle of learning. You make sure that all the information concerning training is stored on the training portal. The learner will then have to pull the required information out of the training portal that he needs and study it. A training portal will have an online help function available for usage by the learner.
